Virtual Machine backup or VM Backup is a type of backup software that designed for backup virtual machine (VM) into various backup file format to prevent data loss or disaster recovery purpose.
However, there are a lot of virtual machine backup (Free or Commercial) out there can fully do backup virtual machines data in the form of point in time shapshot or fully VM data backup of the entire virtual machine state. So, i will explains some free VM backup software that allows you backup or snapshot various virtual machine format or virtualization technology such as VMWARE, Hyper-V, Xen Server or others. Below are the VM backup software list.

Veeam Backup Free Edition
One of my favourite free virtual machine software. This vm backup software allows server administrator do regular virtual machine data backup or data snapshot. You can either backup Vmware or Hyper-V virtual machines.
Overall Veeam Backup Free Edition is the perfect free VM backup solution because:
- Powerful VM backup: Clone, copy, export and manage your VMs. Look inside the VM and restore individual items.
- Simple Setup: No complicated configuration, and no need to power off the VM.
- Free: There is no expiration date on this free VM backup software and no limits on the number of hosts or VMs copy.
Besides VM backup, Veeam software also bundles with with powerful utilities for ad hoc VM backup, granular recovery and e-discovery, and day-to-day VM management. Another important is Veeam backup Veeam Backup Free Edition comes with a full range of restore options, including Instant File-Level Recovery (IFLR), which you can look inside the VM and restore individual guest files. The best part of IFLR is available for 17 file systems from Windows, Linux, Unix, BSD, Mac, Solaris and Novell—for VMs on vSphere and Hyper-V.
However, the limitation of Veeam backup is meant for virtual machine backup only. It’s doesn’t designed to backup physical server.

Naviko Backup and Replication Free Edition
Naviko Backup and Replication Free edition is a new comer for free VMware backup tools designed for VMware environment only. The Naviko free backup and replication editions have been designed to protect VMware environments starting from vSphere Essentials to vSphere Enterprise+.
Naviko Backup and Replication Free edition can be fully installed on Windows or Linux OS, and support latest releases of vSphere 5.5 as well as Windows 8 and Windows 2012 Server. The Vmware VM snapshot can be back up locally or remotely to public cloud storage, compress and de-duplicate your VM backups, provide VM recovery and replication, intuitive Web based interface.
But the free Naviko Backup and replication free edition doesn’t support VM incremental backup, VM scheduled backup and multiple VM Recovery point. You can find these features only at their paid version.
Trilead VM Explorer
Trilead VM Explorer is a free VM backup tool works on VMware ESX / ESXi and Hyper-V environment. However, it allows manage virtual machine up to 5 hosts on their free VM image backup version. The intuitive and easy-to-use web interface offers fast access to backup, replication, restore, Instant VM Recovery and File Level Restore.
However, the free Trilead VM explorer version doesn’t support enterprise vm backup features like Instant VM Recovery, vMotion on IMVR, File level restore via cloud storage and test automation on VM image backup. If you need the enterprise

XSI Backup – Open Source VM Backup Solutions
XSIbackup (Xerox Server Intelligently) is an Open Source VM backup solution designed for Vmware ESXi 5.1 and ESXi 5.5 environments to copy your virtual machines to a datastore in your local or remote ESXi. Meanwhile, this open source VM backup comes with email reporting, hot backup of virtual machine, Unattended backups of servers, automatic provision of backup space for each virtual machine by deleting the older backups, has its own crontab constituting a fully unattended backup solution.
The best part is comes with detailed report per virtual machine (speed, space provisioning, times taken, etc and detailed log of every VM backup session.

Ghetto VCB – Free VMWare backup script
Ghetto VCB is a great VMware script performs backups of virtual machines residing on ESX 3 to EXS 5 servers using methodology similar to VMware’s VCB tool. It will take VM image snapshot and back up to the master VMDK(s) and then upon completion, deletes the snapshot until the next backup. It can support VM image backup to LOCAL STORAGE, SAN and NFS storage location.
