Download DirectX 10 for windows XP is available now. This DirectX 10 for windows XP still in alpha stages and isn’t the original of DirectX 10 files from Microsoft. As Microsoft has announced that the DirectX 10 currently support to Windows Vista only.

However, Cody Brocious the Alky Project leader has released a full preview of DirectX 10 Alky preview compatibility libraries for Microsoft DirectX 10 enabled games. These compatibility libraries allow the use of DirectX 10 games on platforms other than Windows Vista , and increase hardware compatibility even on Vista, by compiling Geometry Shaders down to native machine code for execution where hardware isn’t capable of running it. No reason for gamer to change or upgrade the OS and video card(s) to play the latest games.

So, Here is DirectX 10 Alky preview  which can be used with DX10 SDK.
The DirectX 10 for Windows XP Preview contains a read me file which goes like this :-

To install:
Copy d3d10.dll, d3dx10.dll, d3dx10.dll, dxgi.dll, and Nucleus.dll to C:\windows\system32\

To get the examples:

  • Follow the instructions on Using Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition with the Microsoft Platform SDK
  • Download and install the DirectX SDK

To build and run an example:

  • Go to the Microsoft DirectX SDK folder, Samples, C++, Direct3D10, Tutorials, Tutorial12
  • Double-click “Tutorial12_2005.sln”
  • Select “Start Without Debugging” from the Debug menu.

There are a number of known issues with most of the tutorials, but they will all work to some extent. Tutorial 12 is currently the recommended example.

if you’re serious computer gamer, i highly recommended you give a try download on Direct10X for windows XP and install it. Then you feel the differences especially on the images rendering and images processing. However, Do it carefully !!!!

  5. I copied over the DX10 files for XP like it described in the Preview.zip file & then tried to run a DirectX 10 game called “Lost Planet” but it still would not work?
    I am assuming the examples in the DirectX SDK file are the only examples that work with those DirectX 10 files I copied over to the System32 directory or am I missing something?

    “Application error – The instructions at 0x7c80a2c8 reference memory at 0x00000066. The memory could not be read” click on ok to terminate the program. Click on Cancel to debug the program.

  16. don’t do what he says warning I was lucky system restore was on almost lost use of my computer for copying to system 32 mcaffee went bananas. notice how the d3dx10.dll is repeated which shows you something is amiss.

    This release from Alky Project is a SAMPLE build — it’s still in the alpha stage! It’s a proof-of-concept that can run some simple Direct3D 10 programs from the DirectX SDK. It will NOT run full games like Shadowrun or Halo 2… for that, you’re going to have to wait, as it’s just not there yet.

  23. ok guys, for those of you that keep asking, in order for DX10 to work, YOU NEED A DX10 CAPABLE CARD. I say this in caps only for effect, not to troll. That intel video card mentioned above? not gonna work, or that 7950 as well. DX10 cards are NVIDIA 8-series and AT-2k series chips only.

    and i tried running this with Hellgate, it doesn’t give me an option for dx10 (im on a 8400gs) but i think thats because the alpha drivers are to showcase, not play

  24. Ok, enough with the alphas and the crashes.

    Here’s a 100% reliable way that I used to run DirectX10 based applications/games on my PC.

    (Assuming you already have Windows XP x86)
    1. Install Windows Vista x86(Any Version, evaluation/OEM/unoffical ones work too) on an empty partition.

    2. Start Vista. Then install the games or applications using the SAME “Program Files” directory that of Vista.

    3. Restart and run Windows XP x86.

    4. Go to the “Program Files” directory that of Vista and run your exe.

    See for your self =)

    It worked for me and I was like WOW! Microsoft are screwed :p

  28. The 2 pictures are damn fakes. The one pic, which should be “DIrectX10” is a real time picture and the other is smoothed with photoshop. There are many fakes. For the second picture even DirectX10 isn’t able yet, and FSX really not.
    If that picture was real, there would be many awards fot “best graphics” in year for FSX, but they didn’t get such one.
    At the moment Crysis is the game, which reahes that second fake pic the most

    IF I INSTALLED VISTA THEN WILL IT WORK .

    i don’t think Geforce 7 series will support DirectX 10 on Windows Vista… which the official side stated support the most is Full Microsoft® DirectX® 9.0 Shader Model 3.0 Support.

    The DirectX 10 only support GeForce 8 series only. However, you can have a try to install it… please share with us whether is working or not DirectX 10 can work on other GeForce series

  36. Has anyone else tried what Exon said about running the game from the Vista directory on XP and directX 10 would work? If it does that would be amazing forget all this hassle and waiting for proper release, anyone can confirm? I don’t just want to take it from Exons word. no offence Exon. lol

    you need a DX10 CARD

    what your doing with these files, is basically FORCING windows (which doesn’t normally run dx10) to run DX10. Those files that you enter, edit windows into finding your dx10 card, and improving your graphics with it. theoretically this can work, by using these files or something of the sort, but from what I’ve seen in the comments theres some problems getting them to work

    if anyone has made the files work successfully can u clearly leave a comment saying, (yes this does work)

    just understand this
    The ONLY graphic cards that support directx 10 are the nvidia 8 series and some rubbish ati cards.

    The nvidia 7,6,5,4,3 series do NOT support directx 10. This is something in the hardware that only nvidia 8 series have got. The 8 series is the first card to support the new directx 10 and all of the older cards only support max direct x 9.0c

    So stop with those foolish questions if your intel something supports it, cause the DON’T!!!! this also means all the nvidia cards before the 8 series.

  56. Guys, why go through the hoops of trying to hack something to get it to work where it was never meant to work when you can just get Vista and you’re set? Yes, Vista is more resource intensive so you may need to add some more RAM, but other than that, it is a fine OS and from my personal experience, makes XP look like crap. Stop the Vista hating and just get with the times and upgrade. You’ll be happy you did.

    1st rule: read the basic info on the subject before posting the dumbest questions. Just type DirectX 10 in google and go to the wikipedia link, nothing more, nothing less.
    2nd rule: Do at least a keyword search on this page before posting the same question for the 1000th time.
    3rd rule: Understand that DirectX is a Microsoft product, so don’t come here asking for basic support on DirectX. Try what’s offered here, check the results and then ask relevant questions.

  76. Well i managed to get the DX10 on a windows XP however… Bioshock wont load anymore and there is no way to revert to DX9. On a side note, i can see a big boost in game performance(COD4/HL2/Oblivion) but i can honestly say, if you want to have DX10 that badly just get Windows Vista, and if you cant run Vista then don’t bother, your not missing out.

  77. For those who used dx10 on winXP… Crysis runs fine, but I was not able to get assassins creed working. If you silly like me and did not have restore point to uninstall dx10 you will need to search the windows/system32 for the following files and delete them.

    Install DX9(c) after you done. Reboot. 😉

  81. You need a DX10 capable video card and Windows Vista to run DX10, period. By the time anyone manages to come up with a stable and feature-full version of DX10 for XP, XP will be discontinued so don’t waste your time. And if you don’t want to or can’t upgrade to Vista, stick with DX9 because the hassle of trying to get DX10 on XP is NOT worth it. DX9 is fine.

  82. Vista>xp, you said ” Vista is more resource intensive so you may need to add some more RAM”, from what I’ve seen it actually is not more resource intensive. It allocates memory differently and takes what is available, but gives it back as needed, but people misunderstand. That is not the reason I don’t want to upgrade. It does not support older hardware, such as my TV tuner card, as well as software such as Nero, etc. It would get expensive very quickly to shell out for new versions of all my software and hardware on top of the $$$ for Vista itself.

  83. If u are really want to get DirectX 10 without wasting your old hardware and software… just get some extra cash to buy Windows Vista Ultimate… it has a lot of Driver inside it, then update your Windows Vista at the Microsoft Updates.. It really works! Trust me!

  95. I got the download here at this site for Direct X 10 for Windows XP I ran the download and it said I had installed the hardware successfully. Yet when I clicked on my System icon in control panel it is telling me I am running Direct X 9.0c . What is up with that?

I dont want to run risks yet, i will stay with my DX9c untill this DX10 became more stable, its a great job that this guys done, most of pple would turn to Windows Vista just for use DX10 in their games to see HD content, but leaving WinXP users without DX10 its really annoying, Microsoft just want us to pay them to upgrade to Vista, they could have easily made a DX10 version for XP

  113. Apparently working. Dxdiag shows DX10. HL2 reports “software DirectX = DX10?.Uau!!!…. But….. apparently, my Radeon 4850 Catalyst 8.11 XP drivers, DON´T support DX 10. It´s useless OS supporting DX10 while your drivers doesn’t support it. DX10 games doesn’t install, because they tell they need Vista to play in DX10 mode. Comments? anyone really played games in XP in DX10 mode? With Radeons? Catalyst version?

  119. When I try to configure the video options for Tom Clancy’s H.A.W.X., the DirectX 10 tab is not accessible. But the dxdiag showed the version as DirectX 10.0. Is this normal?

I downloaded this and it worked and all, But it screw’s around with the NIVIDA Driver’s and turn’s it into a realy bad DX 10 version.With Pop Up’s coming up all the time about my DX and missing files. When i Downloaded this i realised it overheated my computer alot more faster and added only a little bit more texture to games, its a good program and all but its not stable and you cant change back to DX 9 unless reinstalling Window’s.

  155. Photoshop and After Effects dont work anymore, ever since i installed this “direct x 10 AVF (Anti-Virus Fix)”

    The error says
    “The procedure entry point wglSwapMultipleBuffers could not be located in the dynamic link libraryOPENGL32.dll.”

    When go to: start -> run -> “dxdiag”, i get a message which says “DxDiag has detected there may have been a problem accessing Direct3D the last time program was used. Would you like to bypass Direct3D this time?”

    And when i go to “DirectX files” tab in this program it says:
    “The file d3d9.dll is an old version, which could cause problems.
    You should reinstall DirectX to get the latest version.”

    I tried installing DirectX 9 again, but it doesnt help.

Hab es installiert z.b. bei Far Cry 2 ist kein umstellen auf dx10 möglich hab die Config .xml datei von Far Cry 2 bearbeitet aber immer noch kein erfolg was habe ich falsch gemacht…hatte vorher die alkey version drauf….trotz alledem nicht schlecht das es immernoch noch leute gibt die sich mit dem tehma auseinandersetzen Open GL muss mehr unterstützt werden

  165. I dunno what some of u people are complaining about, this works wonders for me. Copied all 6 files(instead of just the 5 mentioned here) and done. It made a big difference. I use XP(because I hate Vista.. and can’t get 7), but my card(GeForce 8200M G) supports DX10, which isn’t officially available on XP, so I had to stick with 9.0c up until just now.

    In Oblivion, I used to only be able to play with low settings, without HDR and stuffs. But with this installed I can now enable HDR, fully detailed water & a bit of a specular.

    My laptop crashed at the cops-get-trigger-happy chapter of Mirror’s Edge where somebody got framed for murder and therefore dropped it, but with this DX10 I could even push the texture quality up to high(alas with everything else lowered) level without a fuss.

    And to check with backwards compatible, I tried to run GTA: SA and I’m happy to find that older games like this can be run on its fullest graphic quality.

    My laptop isn’t really a powerhouse, so I’m really happy this DX10 improves my gaming experience, and expands its gaming span. I almost gave up on getting updated with PC games.

    The best solution to the problem msvcrt.dll the following:

    Go to the Windows folder and search for “dwmapi.dll” files and delete them all!

    The dwmapi.dll file are typically located in the following folders:

    c:\WINDOWS\SysWOW64\dwmapi.dll
    c:\WINDOWS\system32\dwmapi.dll

    But I’m not sure that only here, It would be better to search for them!

    This method is completely solved my problem.

    I went to system32 and found that there are ALREADY d3d10_## files in it, and the install guide above mentions THREE “d3d10.dll”s.

    And this “Anti-Virus Fix” sounds especially dangerous. What if, by installing it, I’m actually lowering my anti-virus’s defenses against a virus or Trojan?

    Also, you people have terribly bad spelling. |: (
